Callin is officially six years old today. We celebrated his birthday on Saturday and we thank everyone who was there to share it with us. It is so hard to believe my first born is already six and yet in so many ways he seems older. This year Callin had his cake picked out in July, he had his heart set on a Volcano cake we saw made on the food network channel. Unfortunately the cake is the only thing I had a chance to take pictures of because the rechargable batteries in my camera died and my battery charger is out of commision. To my amazement the cake came out better then I thought it would. I have included the link to the recipe incase anyone is interested.

Halloween is Finally Here
Well I can't believe Halloween is finally here. It doesn't seem like Halloween in Star Valley, there are still leaves on the trees and it is about 50 degrees outside. I suppose its a good thing for the kids so trick or treating won't be so cold. Although we will have to wait an see if Callin stays awake long enough today to make it to trick or treating. If you look closely at the photo you will notice his face is already covered in chocolate and its only three o'clock.

Callin Loves his Glasses
Its been a little over a week now since Callin got his glasses. The first couple of days he liked them but struggled to get use to wearing them all day. Today was the first day he wore them all day at school and didn't ask to take them off as soon as he got home. Its an adjustment to see your child wearing glasses after you have known them their whole life without but Callin is so cute in his glasses, everyone thinks he looks like a little professor.

Callin's Getting Glasses
Last week Callin was diagnosed with Amblyopia in his right eye. (Amblyopia, otherwise known as lazy eye, is a disorder of the visual system that is characterized by poor or indistinct vision in an eye that is otherwise physically normal, or out of proportion to associated structural abnormalities.) Although the optometrists says he was probably born with the condition we had no idea until we received the results from his Kindergarten eye screening. Callin has always been able to see (as far as we knew), he reads well and is very active we had no idea there was a problem with his vision. In all of Callin's previous eye exams the disorder was never detected because he was never asked to cover either eye while reading the chart. Amblyopia is usually not detected in children until their first thorough eye exam. Amblyopia is said to effect 1-5% of the population and detecting the condition in early childhood increases the chance of successful treatment. Thankfully our optometrist believes that Callin's eye can be strengthened with glasses and by wearing a patch over his good eye periodically. I urge anyone with children to have their children complete a thorough eye exam even if they think there is nothing wrong. Luckily Callin is very excited to be getting glasses.

Finally we have a Blog
I have been trying to start a blog for myself and family for months and finally here it is. Jake and I celbrated our six wedding anniversary on August 3rd of this year. Our oldest child is our wonderful son Callin who is currently five years old. Callin has been more then thrilled to welcome our newest addition, Abby (born August 13th) to the family.
